Harmful algal blooms such as Microcystis  were becoming a problem in Michigan while I was in graduate school. So I investigated whether phytoplankton communities were altered by zebra mussels. I synoptically surveyed over 60 lakes for water quality and phytoplankton. This work gave me a perspective on how an ecosystem type, like in-land lakes, vary across a local landscape. I also learned algae identification, my second foray into taxonomy. Products include: Raikow et al. 2004.
